About the institute

Who is Aman?

Aman Institute for Intellectual Security Studies is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that works for the intellectual safety of Muslim youth and addresses deviant thinking through professional programs.

Our mission

Safe minds, strong faith, healthy futures

Aman Institute promotes the intellectual, spiritual, and mental safety of young people and provides solutions to the deviant thinking that leads to addiction, violence, extremism, and life failure.

We work with youth, parents, and the wider community through counseling, workshops, parenting support, research, and online programs such as Tanweer, grounded in a published series of studies on intellectual security for the Muslim community in America.

In Islam, intellectual security is the state of being able to think clearly and critically, without being influenced by harmful or destructive ideas.

From The Islamic Theory of Intellectual Security

Intellectual security

What we mean by intellectual security

  • It is an integral part of the overall security of society, alongside other kinds of security.
  • It rests on preserving a person's identity and thinking from deviation, and on holding to the moderation of Islam.
  • It stems from the Holy Qur'an and the purified Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.
  • Flexibility and renewal are characteristics of Islamic thought.

Our foundations

Six pillars of intellectual security

The theory of intellectual security in Islam, as set out in the institute's work, stands on six pillars.

  1. Spirituality

A living connection with God that anchors the heart and mind.

  2. Values

Moral principles that guide choices and protect against harm.

  3. Culture

A rooted understanding of who we are and where we come from.

  4. Education

Sound knowledge that equips young people to think critically.

  5. Upbringing

Raising children in homes built on care, guidance, and example.

  6. The mosque

A community center for learning, belonging, and support.

Why it matters

Good for the individual, the family, and society

  • The individual

Intellectual security protects the mind from deviant ideology and misguided thinking, so young people can think clearly and choose well.

  • The family

Families built on a sound foundation, enjoying social and intellectual security, are the building blocks of a strong and healthy society.

  • The community

It preserves a community's identity and helps detect deviant ideologies before they take root.
